An itchy crotch is just not good.
It’s uncomfortable, pulls all your attention down there and is distracting, and nobody really wants to watch you scratch at that area.
Now, we want to clarify that if it’s just a little itch that you can address quickly and it goes away, there’s probably not an issue. Occasional itchiness happens to all of us.
We want to talk about the need to full-out relieve something causing constant and irritating itching in your crotch area.
And while we’re at it, we’re going to dive into how to prevent an itchy pubic area.
Better to just avoid the situation if we can, or at least try to.
What causes an itchy crotch or itchy pubes?
Because we know how some of your minds work, we’re going to go ahead and address the fact that itchy pubic hair might be caused by a medical issue. There is such a thing as pubic lice (AKA crabs), men can get yeast infections, contact dermatitis, and there is a whole host of sexually transmitted situations that cause your pubic regions to have itching sensations. If this is the situation — call a doctor and schedule an appointment so a medical professional can help you.
Moving forward to the however…
However, the more likely scenario is that you have one of the following issues going on down there:
- Skin irritation
- Razor burn
- Dry skin
- Allergic reaction
- Sensitivity to a new hygiene product
- Changing from one hygiene product to another
- Jock itch (fungal infection)
- Longer hair getting caught on clothing
Let’s look at each of these in a little more detail, shall we?
Razor burn
The groin area is sensitive. There are a lot of stretchy bits, bits that stick out and down, and bits that are located in the warmest area of a man’s body, so moisture sticks around. If you do not shave carefully around this area, do not use the correct shaving tools, and do not recognize how to protect the skin in this area, razor burn is a very real thing and it sucks.
Razor burn is a rash that occurs when hair follicles are irritated and typically appears as a red area with pimple-like bumps. Irritation can occur as a result of dry shaving (meaning shaving raw and not using water with shaving cream or soap), using an old or dirty razor, or shaving over an already sensitive area.
It’s called a burn for a reason; it’s a wound, and it hurts. It affects the layers of your skin, and as it starts to heal or gets more irritated, the natural reaction your body has is an itching sensation.
To prevent razor burn we recommend the following steps:
- Invest in a high-quality, clean and sharp razor
- Use a moisturizing and lubricating shaving gel (cough, cough check out our Crop Gel™)
- Finish the job with a product that keeps the area protected after the shave like our Crop Reviver® Ball Toner
Dry skin
Even though the groin area can get sweaty, dry skin is a problem a lot of adults deal with, and it’s itchy.
Dry skin can be caused by a variety of things:
- Body cleaning products like certain soaps that do not have moisturizer added
- Dehydration
- Living in dry environments like the desert or at higher altitudes
- Being around chemicals like chlorine if you’re a swimmer
- Excess sweating (of all the rich ironies)
- The winter months
The best ways to prevent dry skin (and also to treat it) is to stay hydrated, use a body wash with moisturizer, and then have a moisturizing product. Drink some water and use Crop Preserver® Ball Deodorant and Crop Cleanser® Groin Wash.
Allergic reaction and sensitivities
A lot of body products out there have chemicals and additions like perfumes that can cause skin sensitivities or even allergic reactions. Sensitive areas and reactions can look like red patches, often burn or itch, and can sometimes spread along the legs and the trunk of a person’s body. If you are experiencing a reaction that is spreading or is affecting breathing please stop reading and call 911. Some allergic reactions are minor, though, and can be solved by popping a few Benadryl and switching products.
A change in products or using the correct product in the first place is truly the answer here. This is a big reason why at MANSCAPED™ our products are made with natural ingredients like aloe, witch hazel, and vitamin E.
Changing of a hygiene product
Our bodies sometimes freak out when there is a change in the routine, so changing a body product can cause irritation. Oftentimes, this one settles down on its own after your body gets used to the product. If you do not notice a change after a week or so, you might need to revert back to something else.
Jock itch
Moisture in general in the groin area causes a level of discomfort, and you might feel a little itchy after a workout or being outside all day. But jock itch is a whole other beast.
Jock itch is an actual fungal infection and is caused by constant moisture being trapped in an area to the point where fungi start to hang around. It’s actually the same fungus that causes athlete’s foot and is extremely itchy and turns your skin scaly and red.
Jock itch is caused by not fully cleaning around the skin and folds of the groin area and by not keeping the area dry and protected.
For prevention, this is another area our Crop Preserver® and Crop Cleanser® can help out.
If you have jock itch there are over-the-counter antifungal medications that can help clear it up and keep that area clean and dry.
Long pubic hair
If your little hairs are curly, then they can twist and curl so that they poke your soft groin skin. It’s definitely itchy and unpleasant. The solution is pretty simple. Cut them down to size so you don't have to deal with those itchy pubes anymore!
Plus a well-groomed groin means you care about yourself and anyone else who might be spending time around that area. We may have mentioned this before. We make a trimmer specifically for body hair. It’s called The Lawn Mower® 4.0.
Get some relief for your itchy pubic area
